Hebrews 12:1-2; John 10:10b
This week is the 2nd of our Stewardship emphasis at Covenant for 2017: October 23-November 20, 2016.
Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness are the 5 disciplines of stewardship of our faith. Each of the 5 weeks will highlight one of the 5, and the summons to commitment. All for the theme, “Learning To Live Generously.”
Jesus and the Early Church will teach us, and we will learn all-the-more together.
This week, October 30: PRESENCE.
The entirety of the Worship Services will lead us to renewal of PRESENCE. A singular note for Sunday at Covenant is ALL SAINTS DAY. We assemble to remember and give thanks to God for all in our Church family who have died in this past year and are now a part of the “great cloud of witnesses” spoken of in Hebrews 12: 1-2. A special service of candlelight as a way of actively remembering your loved ones. Note that “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses…….” What is that about, friends? Reading the preceding chapter of Hebrews, 11, will give a good hint. The writer is reminding us of those folks, and a host of others, in Chapter 11 that paved the way for us as examples of faithful and effective life! And what a legacy they left for us! “Surrounded” means for us that those and millions more are just beyond the shadows, as it were, cheering us on in the living of our days. What a thought that is: to imagine for a moment that any one cares about our journey here, and stands to encourage us along the path! Tis true, indeed. We will celebrate some of that “cloud of witnesses” that have gone before us from Covenant in the past year, and presently, “surround” us. And some in their PRESENCE yet in this earth that do the same.
More to come. See you Sunday.
